Five key principles underpin our investment approach:
A significant market need;
Patented or unique technology;
First-mover advantage or limited competition;
Ability to scale fast and inexpensively; and
Access to data.
The following characteristics are also important:
The ability to achieve all five principles in any one opportunity is likely to be rare. Given this, the principles 1, 3 and 4 above are deemed to be the most important;
Minority stakes are the preferred investment option;
Tritech Global will not invest in start-ups;
Co-investment with management, who must have a significant stake, is a prerequisite;
To further manage risk, co-investment with other equity partners is preferable;
As Tritech Global is a privately owned company, there are no prescribed deadlines for exits;
Tritech Global has controlling stakes in several of its legacy portfolio investments. If not divested wholly or partially, the cash flow from these companies will be used, where necessary, to fund both the international expansion of Tritech Global’s existing businesses as well as invest in new opportunities; and
Tritech Global has its roots in South Africa, an extremely favourable low-cost jurisdiction to develop technology businesses and scale such businesses internationally. In line with its current strategy, the company will continue to pursue opportunities in South Africa.
